Shotokan Karate Terminology

These pages provide information that will be useful for any student trying to grasp the Japanese terminology of Karate. The terms have been divided into separate topics to make navigation of these  easier, click on the tabs below and the directory of terms underneath will change to that topic.

STRIKES

AGE-EMPI UCHI
Upward Elbow Strike. Sometimes called TATE EMPI UCHI. seen in the kata Nijushiho.
HAISHU UCHI
Back Hand Strike. A strike with the back of the hand where the hand and fingers are straight.
HAITO UCHI
Ridge-hand Strike.
HIJI-ATE
Elbow strike, also called EMPI UCHI.
HIJI ATEMI or HIJI ATE
Elbow Strikes.
IPPON NUKITE
One Finger Strike.
IPPON TSUKI
One Finger Thrust. Today we use the term Ippon Nukite.
KEITO UCHI
Chicken Head Strike.
KENTSUI UCHI (or TETTSUI UCHI)
Hammer Fist Strike.
KUMADE UCHI
Bear hand strike. Kumade also means rake or fork.
NIHON NUKITE
Two Finger Strike
NIHON TSUKI
Two Finger Thrust. Today we use the term Nihon Nukite.

Spear Hand
SHIHON NUKITE
Four Finger Strike
SHIHON TSUKI
Four Finger Thrust. Today we use the term Shihon Nukite.
SHUTO UCHI
Knife hand strike
TATE EMPI UCHI
Upward Elbow Strike. Sometimes also called AGE EMPI
TE GATANA UKE
Hand Sword Block, this is now most commonly referred to as ‘Shuto Uke’.
TEISHO UCHI
Palm Heel Strike.
TETTSUI UCHI
Bottom Fist Strike. Also called KENTSUI.

Back Roundhouse Elbow Strike
